Some people will say that people should support states who are trying to legalize physician assisted suicide. This is all misplaced love and false compassion for the following reasons:
First of all the word compassion means “to suffer with”- com patio Latin. If you kill someone or allow someone to kill themselves, this in not suffering with them, but murdering them so you are not suffering with them, but choosing suffering over them
This is dehumanizing
The person and those who help her identify themselves and her not as a person, but only for what is wrong with her, her suffering. They lose sight of her personhood which is always dehumanizing because love always happens between persons.
It cheapens love.
In these acts, this is conditional love. I love you only when it’s convenient or easy for me. If it gets tough, then we should just stop loving.
Love never says “enough”. Love always says “more”…How much more can I sacrifice for you, how much more can I show you I love you
The test of love however is staying with the person when it is not easy, when it is inconvenient
St. John Paul II says, “In fact, his ability to see and foster his wife’s beauty is in fact a test and measure of his love!” (Theology Of Body 92:4)
In this husband who is helping his wife to kill herself, he is not fostering his wife’s beauty but emphasizing her ugliness. He is saying to her in her vulnerability, “Your life is so ugly it’s not even worth living.”
Again, JP II tells us, “The vocation of every man is the dignity of every woman.”
In this, her husband is failing in his vocation, the husband who is supposed to love and protect her dignity is degrading it
Thus, it also is a violation of their marriage covenant
They promise to love each other in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, to death do them part…not until one causes the other death apart
Remember the words of our Lord, “What God has joined together, let no man put asunder [tear apart] (see Matt. 19:6)
Blurs God’s image in us
We are always called to see Christ in one another since we are made in the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:26). In this we find our peace and joy, but in assisting someone to kill themselves, we crucify Christ as we try to kill all that is good in that person by focusing only on what is bad or evil.
Where we should see Christ and goodness, we see Evil, Satan, because we only see the absence of good, of God which is what Satan wants us to see
It is anti-eucharistic
It proclaims not, “This is my body given up for you” but “This is my body, given up for me.
Our Lord tells us, “they shall know you are my disciples by your love” (Jn. 13:35). Love is the key to understanding the Church’s teachings and why she does the things she does. Love is bound in truth and cannot be separated from it. As Scripture tells us:
· “We must not love with word or speech, but with truth and action” (1Jn. 3:18)
· “Love rejoices in the truth” (1Cor. 13: 6)
Truth is what we are made for and is the thing that is foundational for authentic love. This is why I would like to reflect on it today because many have been deceived by the lies concerning artificial contraception.
Many people have been told that contraception is something that keeps “sex safe;” that it has helped save communities, particularly black, Latino, or African, from “undue financial burden,” and that it is about “being responsible.” We have been told that, but as a black Catholic, I stand with the Church in saying, “Don’t buy into the lies!” Here is the truth about the many lies that we have been told.
Lie #1: “Safe Sex” is not safe. It does not protect us from anything. When speaking of contraception, we must also be careful not to fall into the modern lie that “contraception is protection.” It does not protect your family. Before the condom came out marriages had about an 80-85% fidelity rate. Why? Because if a man was going to have an affair there was a high chance that the affair would end in a pregnancy. Afterward the development of artificial contraception, the husband could be unfaithful and nobody would ever know. Now, for Catholics and Non-Catholics alike, the divorce rate is 50%, mainly because of infidelity.
It also does not protect you from Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Did you know that the HIV virus is 700 times smaller than a hole in a condom, but it’s played off as a protective barrier? So in actuality, it doesn’t protect you from STDs. Even if the condom doesn’t break, the best the CDC (Center for Disease Control) can say is it “provides a high degree of protection against a variety of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection” Note it won’t say, “It provides absolute protection against STDs.” The fact that condoms protect you against HIV and STDs is A LIE!!!!! The only thing it “protects you” from is love and so it opens you up to lust. Lust and Hell can be defined by the same 5 words-the absence of God’s love. So a question we need to ask ourselves is, “Why are we ‘protecting’ ourselves from God and our spouse’s love?”
Lie #2: Artificial Contraception protects us from undue financial burden. We must realize that things are burdens; people are blessings. Our Lord shows us on the cross that we are not burdens, that we are worth the sacrifice, and that our retail price is the MasterCard© standard-priceless. St. Peter tells us this in his epistle, “You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things such as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (1Pet. 1:18-19). Jesus didn’t consider us nor human life a financial burden, why should we? That brings us to the last lie about “being responsible.”
Lie #3: Contraception is about being responsible. True, we are called to be responsible as St. Paul tells us, “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have for God. You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1Cor. 6:19-20). Thus we are responsible for glorifying God in our bodies and we do this by being open to: the gift of life, the complete gift of the other person which is love, proclaiming the Good news that we are made for more than just a lustful union, but for a loving embrace. Contraception does none of these and so prevents us from fulfilling our responsibilities as Christians.
Not only that, artificial contraception proclaims an anti-Gospel because the Gospel is “Good news,” but artificial contraception proclaims nothing but bad news. The Gospel proclaims that life is good, sacred, a gift from God. Contraception proclaims that life is bad, is only from us so we should decide who gets it (after all some will say it’s about being “pro-choice”), is not a gift but a curse, burden, or problem to be dealt with. The Gospel proclaims that life is worth living and that we should “be ready to give a witness to the hope that lies within you” (1Pet. 3:15). Contraception proclaims that life is not worth continuing (hence we have to purposely stop conception) and this is a visible sign of despair. Finally, the Gospel proclaims the innate dignity of each human person and race (see Jn. 3:16-17). Contraception proclaims, that our dignity does not matter, neither does our race. According to Planned Parenthood, they gave out 280,000 contraceptives to blacks in 2010. People have been tricked into keeping their race from continuing, from repopulating, and sadly even into doing what nobody has ever been able to do through apartheid, slavery, and persecution-wipe out entire peoples. We are killing off races. We are even electing people into political office that will mandate the government should pay for all, but predominately black and Latino women’s contraception (since 81% of black women support expanding its usage) so that they can do it for free! What are we doing? This is not good news. This is not the Gospel; this is not worth celebrating.
So in conclusion, let us get back to our roots. Let us get back to celebrating, life, love, and truth. Let us get back to fulfilling our responsibilities as loving people within humanity and followers of Christ. In this we will once again live out and promote the only kind of love worthy of those in America, Africa, and throughout the world; authentic love; a love given in truth and is responsible in guarding the human heart.
